FAITH HEALING vs. DIVINE HEALING, AND THE ADVANCE OF PARANORMAL CHRISTIANITY

Much has been said about the issue of “Faith Healing,” the practice of invoking or administering physical, mental or emotional healing by the application of faith. The term, alongside the term “Faith Healers” have been used to describe a broad range of people and methods of healing from many different religious or non religious backgrounds. The terms “faith healing” and “faith healers” have been used erroneously to describe many prominent Christian mystics, who deny being “faith healers” or practicing “faith healing” at all. Rather, they would refer to themselves as “healing evangelists” or “miracle evangelists” practicing what is now commonly termed “Divine healing.”

Such evangelists hold their meetings in small town revivals, tent revivals, international mass crusades and missions trips, healing crusades in coliseums, and other venues. Many wonderful reports and video documentaries of miracles, signs and wonders have surfaced, which showcases the incredible events happening in our time. One could refer to the proponents of this practice as “prophets of the healing message,” in a crucial and prophetical time period of history.

America (and the world, for that matter) has seen its spiritual shifts—the traditional colonists of the Jamestown era, the more religiously convicted Plymouth Brethren of what today is Massachusetts, the godlessness that reigned for a period among their descendants, followed by the great first and second great awakenings, then the long chapters of history relating to the Methodist, Wesleyan and other revivals, the emergence of the nineteenth century cults, followed by the great Pentecostal revivals from the rural white community Unicoi mountains to urban Los Angeles’ initially black community’s Azusa street outpourings, eventuating in the tug of war between the traditional religionism and atheism of the twentieth century in the USA and the emergence of Eastern mysticism during that period.

The 21’s century however has seen America shift from traditional religion and atheism to becoming what has been termed America being “more spiritual than ever in her history.” Not that this should excite the Christian community, because “more spiritual” does not necessarily mean more Christian—in fact thousands upon thousands of Westerners have embraced or at least flirted with Eastern religions and spiritual expression. These religions would include Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoarasterism, and even the more Americanized versions of the East, such as Christian Science, Universalism and the Universalist Church, or more pre-Christian European beliefs as is manifested in Wicca and Goth.

Many Americans have traded their traditional main stream Christian religion for something else, which they follow much more passionately than they had followed mere traditional religion. Along with the interest in other religious or spiritual faith, also came a stronger belief in the supernatural, or paranormal. Psychic television shows draw tremendous ratings, and “health and healing fairs” seem to be attended by a vast array of palm readers and yogis offering their services. While attendance has dwindled in many churches, others have experienced tremendous growth.

Interestingly, while the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS/Mormons) and the Watchtower Society (Jehovah Witnesses) both claim to be the fastest growing Christian religions, they are still outgrown by Islam. There is however a religious movement that is growing faster than the said Christian religions and even faster than Islam. It doesn’t always get the credit, because it is not an organized denomination. The Pentecostal/Charismatic movement has grown faster than Islam, LDS and the WS, with approximately one half of a billion adherents around the world, and growing at a steady pace. This phenomenon has been noticed and has also been featured on Al Jazeera, the Moslem television network.

It is to be noted that the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement in Christianity is a very decisively evangelical movement, adhering to the traditional, fundamental, orthodox faith, with worshipers from both Protestantism and Catholicism, in addition to traditional Pentecostals and Charismatics. Their statements of faith support orthodox theology. Politically they predominately fall within the “religious right” community, supporting pro life and traditional marriage, opposing abortion and gay marriage. Why then is there such a phenomenal growth in a movement that very strongly embraces fundamentalism and traditional, orthodox Christianity? This question is especially appropriate considering that Eastern religious philosophy has increasingly become accepted and promoted within Western culture? The reason for this seems to be because of its harmonious blend between orthodoxy and the paranormal, fundamentalism and supernaturalism. As a Pentecostal leader, Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke put it, they “…preach the original Gospel, with the original power.” The Pentecostal/Charismatic movement has a strong emphasis on the actual, active working of the Holy Spirit in both the corporative church setting as well as in the daily life of the believer. The term “Pentecostal” has its Scriptural roots in Acts 2:1, where the church received the “baptism in the Holy Ghost,” and the term “Charismatic” has its roots in the Greek word charisma, the word used to describe the “gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

No wonder that the mystical side of Christianity with its belief in the supernatural or paranormal has had such phenomenal growth. This is where the word “faith healing” with its “faith healers” comes in. While there is a strong emphasis on the psychic powers of the psychic in the non-Christian spiritual community, there is a strong emphasis on personal prophecy given by the New Testament Christian prophets. And yet again, where there is a strong emphasis on “distant healing,” “energy healing” and “quantum touch healing” in the non-Christian spiritual community, there is a strong emphasis given to faith healing by the faith healer in the Pentecostal/Charismatic community.

But not everyone in Christendom is happy with the faith healing scenario. On the one hand there are those Christians who believe that God does not do miracles today, and on the other hand healing evangelists vehemently denounce faith healing in itself, with the following argument: “We do not believe in faith healing. We believe in divine healing.” For the casual observer there seems to be no difference between the two, but for true fundamental, orthodox healing evangelists, the issue takes on a high priority. The reason for this is that faith healing would make faith in itself a god, because it is God that heals. Therefore, if faith heals, faith is God. For the fundamental, orthodox Christian, who emphasizes the literal interpretation of Biblical text that God is a person, this is a taboo. Therefore the term “Divine healing” is much more common and acceptable, because it is God who heals, not the faith of man in itself.

Is faith then involved at all in Divine healing? “As long as faith points, and connects a person to God Himself,” says healing evangelist Joel Hitchcock. He continues, “Faith in itself is not the healer. God is the healer, but faith makes a connection to God.” He references Mark 5:29-34, where Jesus Christ (as God in the flesh) heals a woman from an issue of blood. Yet Christ credits the woman’s faith for her healing. Joel Hitchcock explains that “… it was God who healed her, so it was [a case of] Divine healing), but it was the woman’s faith that connected her with God, and healed her…” According to Hitchcock, “faith healing borders on the occultic… (sic)”, … and ”the healing evangelist should always emphasize that it is God that heals or does the miracle, not the healing evangelist …” and that the evangelist should “…emphasize the divinity and pre existence of Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, death on the cross, burial, resurrection, ascension and second coming, alongside with the present ministry of Jesus by the person of the Holy Spirit.” He reports that “…thousands upon thousands of souls have been saved in our mass crusades, or healing festivals…” and that “…it is the notable healings—the stunning, awesome miracles of Divine healing and terrific wonderful signs and tremendous wonders that confirm the preaching of the Word, that draw the multitudes to Christ.”

Indeed, it seems that the current generation of healing evangelists are merely following the same trend that the previous generation of healing evangelists followed, such as Oral Roberts, AA Allen, RW Schambach, TL Lowery, TL Osborne, Jack Coe, Kathryn Kuhlman, William Branham, and others had followed. They in turn had followed the same trend that their previous generation of healing evangelists had followed, such as Smith Wilgglesworth, John G Lake, William J Seymour, Amy Semple McPherson and others, some of whom had witnessed the ministries of John Alexander Dowie, and the “grandmother of Pentecost,” Maria Woodworth Etter.

It is encouraging to see a younger generation of healing evangelists emerge. They have witnessed the scandals of televangelists, and seen its excesses. It seems like a strong emphasis is given to integrity and honor in ministry, resulting in the rise of real, legitimate ministries. While these healing evangelists still will have to prove their integrity and honor and earn the trust of this generation, momentum has built and the future looks bright for modern versions of old fashioned healing and miracle evangelists.

THE DIVINE HEALING PRAYER

The Ancient Scriptures teach us clearly that healing available for soul, and also for our bodies.

“Who in His own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)

This Divine Healing Prayer is designed to lay hold of that promise, as well as many other promises found in Scripture, waiting eagerly for an opportunity to be fulfilled.

“He sent His Word and healed their diseases.” (Psalm 107:20) “So shall my Word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11) “Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten My Word to perform it.” (Jeremiah 1:12)

The Ancient Scriptures teach the power of thoughts and words over our bodies:

“As a man THINKETH in his heart so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)

“Death and life are in the POWER OF THE TONGUE. Them that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 18:21)

“Verily verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall BELIEVE that those things which he SAYS shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he SAYS.” (Mark 11:23 )

This Divine Healing Prayer is designed to instill and release THOUGHTS OF HEALING into the heart of the worshiper, and help the worshiper to enlist to power of the tongue, by SAYING, or CONFESSING the promises of the GREAT HEALER SPIRIT, as found in the Ancient Scriptures.
The thoughts and words in themselves do not heal, but it is the real Person of the One who gave the promises who heals. His Presence is manifested when the worshiper is FOCUSED ON HIM and reveals FAITH in Him. It is not the faith in itself that heals, but faith draws the power of the One who heals.

HOW TO USE THE DIVINE HEALING PRAYER

The worshiper may read it as many times he/she wishes, until it flows freely from the heart and lips. Once a week, once a day, twice a day, in the morning or before retiring at night, or however the worshiper's schedule allows. While praying, the worshiper should focus on its words and thoughts but more than that, focus on the Person to whom the prayer is prayed. As the worshiper prays, the Spirit will come. His presence may come, manifesting itself as a warm sensation, a heat upon the body. It may be experienced as gentle electricity pulsating throughout the body. This Presence is not to be feared, but welcomed. The more He is welcomed, the stronger His power may be manifested. This sensation is commonly known as the anointing , the term for the tangible presence and power of God.

THE DIVINE HEALING PRAYER—THE SHORT VERSION

Dear Father God

Your Word says Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers. (3 John 2)

I believe You are a better father than any earthly parent can be. If no parent would wish sickness, disease and oppression upon their child, how then would my Heavenly Father wish these things upon me. Your Word says Or who among you will, if his son asks bread, give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him? (Matthew 7:9-11)

I therefore come to You with boldness and ask for healing in my body and in my soul.

Your Word teaches that Whatsoever things I desire, when I pray, believe that I receive them and I shall have them.

I receive the anointing—the tangible power of God, that flows from Jesus. It says How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and He went about, doing good and healed all that were oppressed… (Acts 10:38 ) And that the whole multitude sought to touch You, for there went virtue out of You and healed them all. (Luke 6:19) And Your power was present to heal them… (Luke 5:17)

You power is present at this very moment to heal me. I reach out to touch You and You reach out to touch me. I receive that healing virtue right now. Like a current of electricity it flows through my body and my soul. As it does, it brings life to my body. It kills disease in any form. It even energizes my immune system, and with prayer, exercise and a healthy diet I expect to live healthy. A radiation of Your power exudes into me and from me and heals me from disease.

I accept Jesus into my heart as my Healer, Lord and Savior. Wash my sins away with Your precious Blood and make me as white as snow. Give me a hunger for the things of God, and make Yourself more real to me than ever before. (Revelation 3:20 , Isaiah 1:18 , 1 John 1:7)

I thank You for healing in my body and in my soul.

In Jesus' Name,

Amen.

DIVINE HEALING PRAYER—THE LONGER VERSION

“Father God,

I approach You this day in the Name of Your Son Jesus Christ. I thank You today for this privilege I have that I may come into Your presence, without guilt or fear. (Hebrews 10:19)

Today I believe that there is healing available for me by Your Spirit. Your power is present to heal. (Luke 5:17)

Jesus, You died on the cross for my sins and sickness. You were wounded for my transgressions. You were bruised for my iniquities. The chastisement of my peace was upon You and with Your stripes I am healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

You said You sent Your Word and healed my diseases. (Psalm 107:20) You said Your Word will not return to You void, but that it will accomplish it's sent purpose. (Isaiah 55:11) You are not a man that You should lie, or the son of man that you would go back on Your promise. Shall you say something and not do it, or speak and not make it good? (Numbers 23:19 ) Rather, You are quick to perform Your promises. You will hasten Your Word to perform it. (Jeremiah 1:12)

You are the Yahweh Rapha, the Lord that healeth me. (Ex 15:26 )

Today I refuse to focus on my disease. I don't deny the existence of my disease, but I do deny its right to exist in my body. And I will not be focused on the disease. Rather, I will be focused on the LORD, and Your healing power in me. Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

In times past, a man believed in the One who raises the dead, and calls those things that do not exist as though they do. (Romans 4:17) Against all odds he believed in hope. He believed the vision God gave him would come to pass and that the Word that was spoken would happen. (Romans 4:18) Not being weak in faith, he considered not his outward circumstances. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. He was fully persuaded that what You had promised, You were also able to perform. (Romans 4:19-21) His prayer was answered, and so is mine. I do not focus on my problem. I focus on You and Your promises. You said it, I believe it and that settles it.

You said as a person thinks within, so he is. (Proverbs 23:7) Therefore I think of myself well, according to Your promises. You said death and life are in the power of my tongue. (Proverbs 18:21) Therefore I will not allow my tongue to continuously speak words of death and disease. Rather I will speak life, for death and life are in the power of my tongue. I will speak words of health and healing, as I am doing now. These words of health and healing have a healing effect upon my body and soul. If I say something and say it with faith, miracles are waiting to happen on my behalf. I have faith in God and the faith of God, the God-kind of faith. I say unto this mountain to be removed and be cast into the sea. I do not doubt in my heart, but believe that whatsoever I say will come to pass and that I will have whatsoever I say.

Whatever it is I desire, when I pray I believe that I am actually receiving it and in due time I will receive it. It first becomes a reality in my spirit, then a reality in my body. (Mark 11:22-24)

It is Your will for me to be healed. You put forth Your hand and touched him saying, I will, be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. (Matthew 8:3) In my case it is also Your will to heal me, because Your will is revealed in Your word. You said that I am your beloved, and that You wish above all things that I prosper and be in health, even as my soul prospers. (3 John 2) Sickness is not the will of a Loving Creator. It was satan that went forth and smote Job with boils from the soles of his foot unto his crown, and he took a potsherd to scrape himself and sat down among the ashes. (Job 2:7-8) But You were the One that healed him and gave him twice as much as he had lost. (Job 42:10)

Job opened himself up to disease and misfortune by fear. What he feared came upon him. (Job 3:25 ) I will not fear but I will believe. God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) My mind is sound, because it is focused upon You and Your promises. I will not be double minded, for a double minded man is unstable in all of his ways. Let not such a man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord. (James 1: 5-8) I will be single minded, focused on You and Your Word. And I will not allow fear to distract me from my faith and hope.

For faith is the substance of things hoped for—the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) By it the ancients received a good report. (Hebrews 11:2) I too will receive a good report, because I believe the report of the Lord. The doctor's report might be different than what I believe can and will be, but I will believe the Report of the Lord—the Report found in Your Word.

I can see what can be. I can see the unseen. By faith I believe the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that the material things we now can see, were not made of material, visible things. (Hebrews 11:3) Everything that was made was made by the Creator Spirit, out of nothing. (Genesis 1:2) When there was nothing, You said it and it came forth. You said “Let there be light” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3) You created the worlds with Your Spirit and Your Word. Your Spirit dwells in me and Your Word is on my lips. The same creative power that brought everything out of nothing is to my disposal. I release that power into my life and will see the results of healing and power.

Without faith it is impossible to please Him, but he that cometh to God must believe that He IS and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

I know my situation might have some impossible elements to it. But I am not ruled by the laws of disease and oppression. (Romans 8:2) I am ruled by another law, because I have been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Your dear Son. (Colossians 1:13) I am no longer a citizen of the kingdom of darkness, disease and fear. I am a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven and have access to all the rights of a duly accepted citizen of Your Kingdom. I once was far off, but have been made nigh by the Blood of Jesus. (Ephesians 2:13) And therefore ALL YOUR PROMISES are YES AND AMEN through Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

With man it is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible. (Mark 10:27 ) The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do to unto me. (Hebrews 13:6) You said, Behold I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for Me? Oh Lord God, behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee… (Jeremiah 32:17, 27) And when I believe You and Your promises, miracles happen, for with God nothing shall be impossible… (Luke 1:37) The One who can make a virgin conceive, can make me conceive my unique miracle and cause me to see that miracle manifested in my body and in my soul.

If You could heal a whole nation in a day, you can certainly heal me. You brought them forth with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. (Psalm 105:37) You healed the multitudes. (Luke 6:19) You can heal me. They sought to touch You, for healing virtue flowed from You. (Luke 6:19) Today I touch You with my hope and my faith. Virtue and power goes froth from you and my faith makes me whole. (Mark 5: 30 , 34) I receive your healing virtue now. I open myself up to a free flow of Your power into my life. God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed. (Acts 10:38 ) Your anointing is Your tangible presence and power. I allow that presence, that glorious power to flow through my body. Even at this very moment I become aware of Your power surging through my body and my soul. A warm sensation of Your beautiful presence envelops me. It is like a blanket of love is placed upon me. A sensation like electricity softly and gently goes through my body. The sensation becomes stronger and I am overwhelmed with a sense of Your mighty love and power.

If the power of God was present even in the bones of a prophet, and caused a dead man to be raised back to life, how much the more may the power of God raise me to health while I am still living. (2 Kings 13:21) I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. (Psalms 118:17)
I have prayed an effectual, fervent prayer—a prayer energized in me by the Holy Spirit. This kind of prayer availeth much, has great results. I pray, and I accept the prayers of matured believers, anointing me and praying over me in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and if he hath committed any sin, it shall be forgiven him. (James 5: 14-16)

I repent of my sin. For sin is a blockage the free flow of the power of God. If I keep sin in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. (Psalms 66:18) But if I confess my sin, You are faithful and just to forgive me of my sin and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

I cannot serve two masters. I cannot serve God and Mammon, Jehovah as well as Baal or Dagon or any other deity. (Matthew 6:24 , 1 Kings 18:21 , 1 Samuel 5:1-7) I can and will serve the One and Only True God. (Deuteronomy 6:4, 5) A jealous God, who will have no other gods beside Him. (Exodus 34:14) Therefore I accept Jesus today either for the first time, or I do so again now confirming You as my Lord and my Savior.

Jesus, You stand at the door of my heart and my life. You knock. I hear Your voice and open the door, and allow You to come in. (Revelation 3:20) I ask for forgiveness. Wash my sins away with Your precious Blood. (1 John 1:7) Cleanse me and make me white as snow. Even if my sins were as scarlet, they are washed away and I become as white as snow. (Isaiah 1:18) I do not rely on my own righteousness, because in Your standards and in the brilliant light of Your glory they are as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6) Rather, I rely on Jesus in His death and resurrection, to wash me and cleanse me. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. The old things have passed away. Behold all things have become new. This very moment all things become new for me. 2 Corinthians 5:17) You wash me with the water of Your Word and Your Spirit. (Ephesians 5:26) You anoint my head with oil, my cup runneth over. On the inside, I am clothed with a white robe of righteousness. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalms 23, Revelation 3:18)

I receive my healing, and consider it done in the mighty Name of Jesus. Because whatsoever I ask in Your Name, that You will do, that the Father my be glorified in the Son. (John 14:13) And I will not give up hope and faith. I will keep on praying and believing, thanking and praising until and way beyond the day my miracle manifests in my body.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
